Google I/O 2009 – How Do I Code Thee? Let Me Count the Ways Dan Morrill The primary way to develop apps for Android is using managed code that runs in the Dalvik virtual machine. Yet, Android also includes a super-modern Browser that includes Gears. It’s even possible to build parts of your apps in native code (that is, C.) Choice is good, but it does mean one more decision for the developer to make — and in this case, a big decision. Should you write your app in managed code, to integrate cleanly and seamlessly with the system? Should you write your app in the Browser as “Ajax plus”, so that it can run on multiple phone platforms? Or should you go for raw speed, and write part of it in ARM-processor native code? There’s no universal answer to these questions, but in this session Dan Morrill will teach you to pick the technique that works best for your app. In this session, you’ll get a demonstration of each technique, and learn how to apply them to your own apps. For presentation slides and all I/O sessions, please go to: code.google.com/events/io/sessions.html

System Of A Down Album: Steal This Album! Song: Thetawaves Year: 2002 Lyrics: The unsettled mind is at times an ally, Leaving the senses to fend for themselves, The senses collect undeniable data, About beta carotine and thetawaves, The unsettled mind is at times an ally, Leaving the senses to fend for themselves, Then, the senses wanted the sky… All rise, eyes bound Time feels like a midnight ride, Finality waits outside, Weeping in perplexity’s arms, Caressing our smiles inside… The national debt is at times an ally, Leaving the people to fend for themselves, The people collect undeniable data, About high pulse weapons and microwaves, The national debt is at times an ally, Leaving the people to fend for themselves, Then, the people found out the lie… All rise, eyes bound Now our eyes have been found Time feels like a midnight ride, Finality waits outside, Weeping in perplexity’s arms, Caressing our smiles inside, Waiting to get you high, Waiting to touch the sky, All rise, eyes bound Now our eyes have been found Time feels like a midnight ride, Finality waits outside, Weeping in perplexity’s arms, Caressing our smiles inside.

Ali: The Man He’s still the most recognizable man on earth. And over forty years after he burst onto the scene as a gold-medal winner at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Muhammad Ali remains a magical figure, known and loved throughout the world. Dubbed “Athlete of the Century” by GQ magazine, Muhammad continues to receive accolades for his contribution to sports. He has been named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsman of the Century,” the BBC’s “Sports Personality of the Century,” the World Sports Award’s “World Sportsman of the Century,” and the State of Kentucky’s “Kentuckian of the Century.” In 2005, he received the United States of America’s highest civil award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As a boxer, Muhammad brought unprecedented speed and grace to his sport, while his charm and wit changed forever what the public expected a champion to be. His accomplishments in the ring are the stuff of legend — two fights with Sonny Liston, where he proclaimed himself “The Greatest” and proved he was; three epic wars with Joe Frazier; the stunning victory over George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle; and dethroning Leon Spinks to become heavyweight champion for an unprecedented third time. But there was always far more to Muhammad than what took place in a boxing ring. Muhammad’s life and career have been played out as much on the front pages of newspapers as on the inside sports pages. His early embrace of the Nation of Islam and his insistence on being called Muhammad Ali instead …

ART ONE: FREE TO CHOOSE Sandel introduces the libertarian conception of individual rights, according to which only a minimal state is justified. Libertarians argue that government shouldnt have the power to enact laws that 1) protect people from themselves, such as seat belt laws, 2) impose some peoples moral values on society as a whole, or 3) redistribute income from the rich to the poor. Sandel explains the libertarian notion that redistributive taxation is akin to forced labor with references to Bill Gates and Michael Jordan. PART TWO: WHO OWNS ME? Libertarian philosopher Robert Nozick makes the case that taxing the wealthy—to pay for housing, health care, and education for the poor—is a form of coercion. Students first discuss the arguments behind redistributive taxation. Dont most poor people need the social services they receive in order to survive? If you live in a society that has a system of progressive taxation, arent you obligated to pay your taxes? Dont many rich people often acquire their wealth through sheer luck or family fortune? A group of students dubbed Team Libertarian volunteers to defend the libertarian philosophy against these objections.
